Is there anyone know how the icon compiler
was build? Is it still based on the virtual stack machine
as the interpreter or there is better representation? And
where can we find more information on icon compiler
implementation? Thanks.
Ken Walker's dissertation describes the implementation in detail.
It is published as Technical Report 91-16 by the University of
Arizona's Department of Computer Science. Contact the TR librarian
(tr-libr@cs.arizona.edu) for information about obtaining a copy.
The source code for the compiler is included in the Unix distribution
package for Icon. I should maybe add a warning that the Icon group's
efforts have mostly focused on the interpreter lately. The compiler
by its very nature is much more complex and you don't want to mess with
it unless you *really* need to.
